Best Carpet for Boat Trailer Bunks

Loading the boat on and off a trailer can be a “traumatic” experience for your boat. No matter how careful you are, you’ll probably end up scratching the hull at least once or twice. So, what can one do to avoid that? The best remedy for abrasion is padding. That’s right: by wrapping carpet around the bunk boards, you’ll be able to protect the boat and keep it from harm’s way.

But wait – how do you find the perfect padding? It can be quite a challenge to find the right product that’s equally durable, affordable, and easy to use. Don’t you worry: I know exactly what the Best Carpet for Boat Trailer Bunks looks like and made a list of the top five products from leading brands. Let’s go ahead and see what they’re all about!

Best Carpet for Boat Trailer Bunks 2021 Review

1. CE Smith Trailer Roll Carpet Replacement

CE Smith Trailer Roll Carpet Replacement

What’s the most important thing in a trailer bunk carpet? Most experts claim that it’s the thickness, and I can’t disagree. While different materials have different properties, as a general rule, the thicker the padding, the better. First of all, it will last longer. Secondly, a dense carpet will provide a smoother “experience” for your boat. This padding is also rather heavy, which is another big pro.

With that said, CE Smith is incredibly flexible and pliable. You won’t have any issues cutting it even with the most basic scissors. Add enhanced compatibility (this product works equally well with metal and wood boards), and you’ll see why I decided to put it on the #1 spot. There’s one minor downside, though: some boat owners report QA issues. Mostly, they complain about getting the wrong size. If that happens to you, don’t hesitate to contact support.

CE Smith did exemplary work with this roll carpet. It is highly flexible, versatile, and can be wrapped around bunk boards of any shape and size. The thick and heavy nature, in turn, ensures a long and scratch-free life for your boat. Sadly, the company’s QA isn’t always as great as its production quality.

2. SeaSense Bunk Carpet

SeaSense 12 in x 12 Ft Bunk Carpet-Charcoal

Moving up with the list, we’ve got SeaSense with another premium-quality bunk carpet. This padding is available in a long list of styles and colors. Plus, you can get packs of two, three, four, and five, depending on the task at hand. You won’t have to pay a pretty penny for those, by the way. This is a reasonably-priced product. And, it is very easy to cut and has a strong grip. So, you should stop worrying about getting the exact right fit.

As long as you’ve got enough (or even a bit more), you’ll be able to cut the padding to fit the trailer boards. The unusual shape deserves our attention as well. It was specifically designed for minimal water retention. As a result, this carpet doesn’t accumulate water. Do keep in mind, however, that this bunk carpet isn’t particularly thick. So, it might deteriorate over time, especially if you’re not very careful with it. But, that’s the only con.

While this isn’t the most durable and long-lasting carpet, it sure does have its fair share pros. Most importantly, it is easy to cut and reshape. Secondly, you can get pretty much any size/style you want, and the carpet won’t get wet no matter how rainy and humid it is outside.

3. Attwood 11246-1 Trailer Bunk Padding

Attwood 11246-1 Trailer Bunk Padding

Much like with the previous carpet, with the Attwood product, you’ll get advanced water resistance. Strong protection against the UV rays will be a part of the deal as well. It’s no secret that the sun and water (moisture, to be exact) are any padding’s biggest nightmare. But, that’s not the case with the 111246-1 padding. Crafted from 100% polypropylene, it’s a true marine carpet for boats.

Along with that, thanks to the soft and smooth nature, the Attwood carpet is great at eliminating scratches on the boat. And that’s not even its biggest selling point! Compared to the other padding products on the list, this is the most affordable one. So, if you’re on a tight budget, it might be the right pick. Do keep in mind, however, that the company takes rather long to deliver the carpet.

There’s very little not to like about the Attwood boat trailer bunk carpet. It is a low-budget, user-friendly product that keeps scratches to a minimum. It’s weather-resistant, too, and will serve you for quite a long time. The only minor con is the not-very-fast shipment and delivery.

4. Lancer Boat Trailer Bunk Carpet

Lancer Boat Trailer Bunk Carpet

If you’ve got a really big boat and need extra-long padding to cover the bunk boards, Lancer’s offer is exactly what the doc ordered. It is available in various sizes, starting with 12 inches up to 24 inches. This is a high-quality product and includes rubber backing for extra protection against humidity, mold, and mildew. Heavy-duty, ravel resistant, and pliable, it won’t be a problem to customize for a perfect fit with the trailer.

Some cheaper carpets unravel and fray once you cut them – that won’t be a problem with Lancer. The company is quite good at logistics and shipment, too. So, does that mean we’ve got a perfect carpet on our hands? It is pretty awesome, that’s true. But, I do have to mention that dimensions/measurements aren’t 100% accurate. You actually won’t get 24 inches in width – only 23+. That wasn’t a problem for me when I was stapling it into the boards, though.

Despite the somewhat misleading dimensions in the specs, the Lancer carpet is a God-sent for the average boat owner. It’s made from decent-quality materials, includes rubber backing, and has proven to be highly ravel-resistant. And, it can easily cover the largest boat trailers.

5. Fulton Replacement Trailer Bunk Carpeting

Fulton Replacement Trailer Bunk Carpeting

Last, but not least, I want you to take a close look at Fulton’s carpet. This is the best-looking padding product on the list. It’s got that “expensive” touch to it and makes any trailer look dope. It’s a 100% US-made carpet, by the way, and was specifically designed and sewed to hold the heaviest boats. Sadly, it’s not particularly fray-resistant. That’s right: you need to be extra careful when cutting it.

Otherwise, it will unravel quickly. One way to avoid that is to burn the edges; but, again, be very careful not to make matters worse. On the bright side, Fulton covers this carpet with a five-year guarantee. It’s a limited warranty, of course, but I still encourage you to contact support when an issue comes up. This marine-grade carpet can be the most effective solution against hull scratches, but only if you use it the right way.

The Fulton replacement carpet isn’t perfect. The edges tend to fray, and cutting it can be a challenge. Still, it will be a worthy investment. Sturdy, easy to use, and backed by a warranty, it will be a safe bet for most boat trailer owners.

Conclusion

Boat bunk padding isn’t the most sophisticated product out there. However, you can’t just go ahead and pick the first one you see at a local shop. The carpet needs to be of the right size and made from premium-quality materials. Otherwise, you’ll end up with an average-at-best carpet that won’t protect the boat from scratches. Today, we checked out some of the best padding products the market has to offer.

They are all equally reliable and worth your attention. Some of them will be a better pick, of course, depending on your boat, the trailer, the bunks, and everything else in between. So, read my detailed reviews thoroughly and pay extra attention to the pros and cons. They will help make the right decision and enjoy your new carpet!
